Deacon Blue is a Glasgow-based Scottish pop band that established in 1985. Their name was inspired by the song “Deacon Blues” by Steely Dan. The band’s lineup includes Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh on vocals, James Prime on keyboards, and Dougie Vipond on drums. Ewen Vernal, a bass guitarist, was also a member of the original Deacon Blue band. Deacon Blue’s initial guitarist was the late Graeme Kelling, and the current guitarist is Gregor Philp. Although Kelling and Philp are the only two official Deacon Blue guitarists, a few others have played on Deacon Blue albums; for their 2001 studio album ‘Homesick’ (which was recorded while Kelling was ill), the guitarist was switched around for different tracks,
Mick Slaven or Davy Scott filling in when Graeme Kelling found it too difficult. Raintown, the band’s first album, was released in the United Kingdom on May 1, 1987, and in the United States on February 1, 1988. The album has overtones of a concept album relating to the struggles of getting by in the inner city of urban life – the city being unmistakably Glasgow, as referenced by the band’s roots and the images on the album’s cover, a view of a rainy day over Glasgow’s West End (with the Finnieston Crane prominently featured) and, on the back, a long-exposure capture of the Kingsthorn. When the World Knows Your Name (1989), their second album, topped the UK Albums Chart for two weeks and included “Real Gone Kid,” their first UK top 10 hit. Whatever You Say, Say Nothing, Deacon Blue’s fourth album, was released in 1993. They left the group when Vipond decided to pursue a career in television.
