Nearly ten years after her record deal, Guyton became one of country music’s most captivating voices in 2020. Her beaming career started with “What Are You Gonna Tell Her,” which was motivated by her experiences as a female in a male-dominated field.

Guyton was one of the four kids born to Phyllis Ann Roddy and Michael Eugene. Her father was an engineer, and she is a descendant of African Americans.

The singer/songwriter had initially been enrolled at the local public school; however, due to racial prejudice from other families, she was later moved to a private facility. Despite this change, Mickey continued to experience racism; in 2020, she told NPR that her best friend’s parents frequently referred to her in racist terms.

Mickey began singing when she was young and developed a passion for music at five. She frequently sang in church choirs, especially at Arlington’s Mount Olive Baptist Church. She was inspired to start singing after seeing LeAnn Rimes perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the start of a Texas Rangers game.

After high school, the singer relocated to Los Angeles, California, where she attended Santa Monica College and pursued a career in country music. She studied business while working minimum-wage jobs to support herself, including background singing in Nick Cannon’s movie Underclassman.

The singer also gave an American Idol audition and sang on demo tapes. Just before the live shows for the top 24 contestants, Guyton’s audition was disqualified. She just made a fleeting appearance on television at her last singing audition.

In February 2022, Mickey Guyton sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. The country singer had a vast platform, and she made everyone proud.
